Makenna Lucey Portfolio - Travel Business

The Travel Business project was a group assignment. Students were paired and tasked to select a location and office type from a preselected list. Teachers predetermined the office layout; the layout could not be changed. Students were to focus on the office's materials, lighting, and colors to create their specific interior.

Researching the location and culture of the surrounding site helped drive a specific vibe for the space. As a team, we were inspired to utilize natural materials and colors to reflect the local culture, with hints of red as accents.

The project was equally divided between the two of us. We thoroughly worked together, determining what we liked and disliked with material, color, and lighting combinations.

Site Research

Location

- Kyoto, Japan is home to around 2000 religious sites; including, buddhist temples, shinto shrines, palaces, and gardens. It is one of the best preserved cities in Japan. It is home to Japanese foods and cuisine and is an attraction to many tourists and visitors.

Climate

- In Kyoto, summers are hot and cloudy, lasting from June to September. Winters are very cold and windy, lasting from December to March. Rainfall occurs throughout the year, but June to September sees a lot of rain, and October to May stay relatively drier.

Culture

- When building and designing in Kyoto, five basic actions were developed to suit the region’s cultural and religious specificities :

- Conform to the scenery

- Maintain the harmony between traditional culture and modern development

- Contain a multitude of spaces which illustrate the unique characteristics of Kyoto

- Enhance the city’s livelihood

- Foster partnership developments.

Office Location

The office space would be located near Kyoto Tower. In the center of Kyoto, this heavily business sector is near local attractions for tourists, such as monumental structures, gardens, hotels, mall strips, museums, a river, and train stations.
