Project Summery
The Dwelling Project focuses on the clients’ Celesta and Hakim, two public defense lawyers. Who opened their home to Celetsa’s mother, Ameilia, who has dementia, and her caregiver, Amanda. The site, 262 Bond Street, Brooklyn, resides in Gowanus, a former industrial zone surrounding Gowanus Canal. The canal is highly toxic due to its past use as a waste site for local factories. However, the current area consists of hipsters and young professionals with many studios, trendy bars, and casual eateries. Inspired by the private and public spacial planning of Casa Venture, the site’s final design blurs the lines between public and private spaces while embracing nature. Visitors are first welcomed by multiple views of courtyard gardens from the entryway. The kitchen and dining area are one step above the entrance foyer as the location resides in a potential water flooding zone due to the local canal. While both exterior gardens are at ground level. The site includes two staircases; one exterior public garden staircase and one interior semi-private staircase. Each stair leads to additional private or public spaces throughout the dwelling. Large glass windows and skylights focus on specific areas, such as the living room and garden staircases. Each bedroom faces outside towards a courtyard with no adjacent rooms; each room is given privacy. The site has simplistic material choices to emphasize the simple focus on nature. Wooden entry flooring continues onto the exterior staircase. Black tile is utilized in the public spaces, kitchen, dining room, and living room and is continued outside onto the terraces and rooftop. Wooden ceilings and furnishings create a warm effect against the white plaster walls and black flooring.
